The Pennant Doubles Tournament
(Played Sat, 17 July at NHIA & Reported by Alan B)
We were promised rain but thankfully all we got throughout the whole day was dark threatening clouds and a few spots of rain. What we also got was boule played at a very high standard and I think a very enjoyable day.
19 teams took part and a four round snake was held in the morning followed by seeded knockout for both the main and plate competitions.
Three teams managed to win all 4 games so they, together with the 4 teams that won 3 and the top team that won only 2 games went through to the main competition.
In the plate it was necessary for 6 teams to play off preliminary games to enter the competition; out of probably misguided generosity I feel I cannot name those teams who failed to qualify!!
In the semi-finals of the main competition Torsions (Toni & Ross) was eventually outplayed by Enigma (Matt & Andy) 13-7 and after a very long and tight game Lucky for Some (Miles and Tom) beat Buxom Wenches (Denise & Emma) 13-11.
In the final it was very tight for the first half of the game until Enigma eventually beat Lucky for Some.
In the plate semi-finals Sorry (Susi & Amy) lost to Double Trouble (Tony & Amanda) 13-7 and Mad Hatters (Richard & Elaine) to Fox & Duck (Neil & Bev) 13-5
In the final Bev played exceptionally well and she and Neil won 13-1; this result didn't however reflect on how well Amanda had played throughout the day and it's always a pity when luck deserts you in a final.
I would like to thank all those who turned up on the day to play, Paolo for marking out the pistes and to the two persons who kept us all well fed throughout the majority of the day from the barbq.
