Match Rules of the
Keystone Brewery Pétanque League
This league is a friendly league and introduction of these rules is not intended to alter common practices the game of petanque. They will however be useful where misconceptions arise, and invaluable in cases of dispute. You may find that modification of some rules will make play more relaxed but only by complete agreement of those involved

The League shall abide by the Official Rules of Pétanque as modified and adopted by the English Petanque Association (EPA), subject to the modifications and additions set out below.

Any dispute regarding the interpretation of these rules must be referred to the League Organiser.

SECTION 1:
LEAGUE MODIFICATIONS TO THE ABOVE OFFICIAL RULES:

Article 2a: add (e) Dog or leisure boules are permitted.

Article 3: Manufacturers mark and FIPJP approval is NOT necessary.

Article 4 (b): omit Article 5 paragraph 3 & 4: replace with "Within the Keystone Brewery League matches will be played on a minimum of one Pistes each measuring a minimum of 10m x 1.5m.

Article 16: para 3 If the piste makes this difficult then particular attention should be paid to para 2 of this article. Total silence is not necessary

Article 18: add String boundaries are to be taken as the limits of the area in which a game is to be played. Any contact of a boule or cochonnet with such a string renders it out of play.

Article 20: omit

Article 24: add Deep grit, gravel or sand on the terrains
Note:b)
The surface of the piste may be raked or otherwise flattened between ends, nevertheless, the 'last hole' may be filled at any time during the game, as permitted in the Official Rules.

Articles 31 t0 34 and 6 to 40 should be omitted for normal league matches. However attention should be made to the match format section of these rules. Although penalties will not usually be incurred it is expected that the following code of behaviour will be followed.
1. Refrain from using foul or abusive language to others
2. Refrain from drinking alcohol to excess during the game
3. Accept the decision of the nominated umpire ( see rule 13 later)
4. Ensure that litter and cigarette / cigar butts are not dropped on the piste.
5. Ensure that pets and persons not involved in the game in progress do not encroach onto the piste, or otherwise interfere with the game.
6. Behave in a courteous manner and abide by the umpires decision as befits a friendly league.
These rules are set out as a guide to enjoyable play and for reference in the event of dispute, however the main purpose of the league is to have fun playing pétanque.

SECTION 2:
LEAGUE & MATCH FORMAT

1/ THE FIXTURES:
1.1The League fixture list will be drawn up on a weekly basis for the season.

Matches must be played during the specified week (the week being from the Sunday to the Saturday).

All teams will play each other on a Home and Away basis.

1.2 Each match will consist of 3 games:
1 game of triples Each player to throw only TWO boules.
2 games of doubles Each player to throw only THREE boules.
Lots may be drawn to select players if more than 4 team players are present, and for example to select triples players.
Note: The number of boules each player may throw applies even if a team has to play with players short.
Where possible, the triples games should be played first. All games are to be played to THIRTEEN points.

1.3 Matches will normally be played on Sunday Morning. The Home team shall be responsible for convening the match. If matches are convened on any other day it shall be by mutual agreement, preference being given to the choice of the Home team. 48 hours notice of cancellation or re-arrangement must be given or the match forfeited by the team responsible. The League secretary must also be informed of any changes

1.4 Any team unable to fulfil the above conditions shall forfeit the match, losing all games and winning no points. The 'innocent' team will be awarded the average of the scores achieved in all its other matches during the season. Should a real emergency occur, this rule might be waived by reference to the League Organiser within three days of the occurrence and the match re- convened to suit the 'innocent' team.
NOTE:  It must be advantageous, and certainly in the spirit of the game, to play a match with fewer than 4 players, rather than forfeit the match. Any points scored, and any games won are better than losing the lot! And, being a fun league, at least those that turn up will get a 'League' game while others can be played for fun.
2/ TIME OF MATCHES:
2.1 Both teams shall be at the match venue by 10.00 hrs. All players available should start playing by 10.30 hrs. Players arriving late may join the game at completion of the end in play.
3/ LATE START OF PLAY:
3.1 The times given above are to be adhered to wherever possible.

3.2 At times a team may know that they cannot make this start time. In which case they should phone their opponents in good time to warn them of their late arrival.

3.3 A game should not be delayed if a player is expected to arrive shortly. The game should be started without him/her as mentioned above (Rule 2). However by agreement of both captains, a doubles match may be played first.

3.4 Failure to give warning of late arrival, or persistent late arrival, should be reported to the league Organiser. He/she, together with the Committee, will take such measures, as they deem fit.
NOTE: This is a friendly League. The standard of punctuality demanded is that of simple courtesy!
4/ AT ANY MATCH:
4.1Both teams MUST have:
a) a suitable measuring device. -- in addition, the Home team should have a copy of these Rules available.
b) a copy of the Official Rules.
c) sufficient score boards.
5/ BEFORE THE MATCH STARTS:
5.1 The Home team must explain any local rules regarding boundaries (see amendment article 21), trees, etc.

5.2 The Home team must provide a Match Form to record all details of the match.

5.3 Each captain may choose their teams pairs and triples as they see fit unless the drawing of lots is required,(see 1 above)

5.4 Names must be entered on the match report form prior to that game of doubles or triples starting.
Play can then commence.
6/ THE SCORING:
6.1 The scores will be recorded on the Match Form to show:
a) The points scored by each team in each game
b) The number of games won by the Home team
c) The total number of points scored by Home team.
d) The total number of points scored by Away team.
ITEMS B, C & D (in this order) REPRESENT THE MATCH SCORE
6.2 The Home team will ensure that scores B,C,and D. are reported by phone or E-mail to the League Secretary prior to the Wednesday following the week in which the match was played.

6.3 The Match Form should be kept by the Home team for scrutiny should a dispute arise. 7/ PENALTIES FOR LATE RETURN OF MATCH RESULTS:
7.1 If any team fails to meet the requirement of Rule 8 on more than TWO occasions during the season; the League Organiser may deduct Ten points from their total points score.
8/ TEAM POSITIONS WITHIN THE LEAGUE:
8.1 The number of points won will determine league positions.

8.2 Where two or more Teams have won the same number of points, the number of matches won shall determine their relative positions.

8.3 If any positions are still indeterminate, they shall be determined by the total 'points differences' of those Teams.
9/ FORCE MAJEURE:
9.1 If the team captains agree that force majeure prevents the completion of a match, it shall be reconvened at a mutually agreed time or date.

9.2 If the match is reconvened later on the same day, all scores stand and unfinished games continue where they left off.

9.3 If the match is reconvened at a later date the scores for finished games will stand but unfinished games will be restarted using the original players where possible.

9.4 In the interests of safety it is strongly recommended that play be stopped for the duration of localised electrical storms.
10/ UMPIRING:
10.1 Arbitration in any one game may be delegated to a player not involved in that game. The delegated player must be treated as if he/she were the Umpire and his/her decision accepted as final. Note that the Official Rules stipulate:
a) that both teams in any game must have suitable measuring equipment (feet must not be used).
b) That the team who threw the previous boule is responsible for measuring to establish who holds point, their opponents having the right to check the measurement.
c) That arbitration can be requested at any stage in a game.

10.2 Being a Fun League, players do not need the Umpires permission to leave the terrain, --- simply ask your opponents permission. Any case of dispute, omission, or confusion over the above rules should be referred to the current League organiser and committee whose decision will be accepted as final.
